Obama vs. Old Folks

Will he or won’t he? That question isn’t necessarily about whether or not he’ll win the Democratic nomination, but whether or not he’ll meltdown completely and lose it.

In a few short weeks he’s gone from unflappable front-runner to flipflopping stammerer, forced to play defense for the first time while Hillary’s going all out on offense.

The “black leaders” are starting to turn on him (see this CC post for more) as they start to realize the damage that could be done if a black man is actually elected president (see this CC post for more). The Dem leadership is starting to grow uncomfortable as he closes in to the needed delegate count, squirming in their chairs as they realize that his race will play an issue no matter how badly they hoped it would not.

But a disturbing pattern is also arising, one that is really making the Dems sit up and take notice and could be an issue that will turn the tide for Hillary and one that will be a huge issue against McCain if Barack is indeed the Dem candidate. That pattern is that Barack has no traction amongst the elderly.

Strange point? Actually, not at all. Most of us “young-ens” tend to dismiss the elderly vote, considering them to be tertiary players and not a big influence, but that idea is dead wrong. Our elderly vote with a lights-out consistency. You can count on them to do their part and if a candidate ignores them, it’s his or her ass.

Of the 62 million or so elderly citizens (age 55+) in the US, 76% of them are registered to vote and in 2004, 71% actually voted in the presidential election. That makes them the most active group in the nation. Barack’s answer to this, of course, is the youth vote, but any seasoned political strategist, pundit, commentator or even casual observer of the political process will tell you that relying on the youth to vote is like relying on me to be at your house to help you move. i.e. Don’t count on it.

In ’04, of the 57 million citizens age 18-34, only 61% were registered to vote and barely 51% showed up on election day. Uh oh. P Diddy may be out there hollerin’ for everyone to “Vote Or Die” but apparently, death isn’t really that big of a deal because they certainly aren’t voting. Barack can’t count on the young, so he’s gotta go for the old. And the old don’t really seem to like him much.

At this point in the game, Barack’s performance with the elderly is almost ridiculous. He’s getting beat 2-1 in some cases (Hillary won 72% of the elderly in Ohio). It’s not even close. Granted, the old folks love their Clintons and McCain is no Bill, but I’ll tell you what McCain is: 71 years old and a war veteran.

Now, I’m not saying that the elderly folks of the USA are stubborn, but try changing the Sunday meal from meatloaf to pizza and see what happens. Complete fucking meltdown. Now tell me with a straight face that an elderly voter is going to openly embrace Barack Obama over a guy who is their age? The elderly did lean toward Bill Clinton more than their age-group candidate, Bob Dole, but can anyone tell me the big difference between Bill Clinton and Barack Obama? Bill, with his white hair and charm wasn’t exactly out of their comfort zone. I’m not sure the same can be said for Senator Obama.

So, not unlike many of the folks who write here, I’m definitely of the mindset that John McCain beats Obama, but as the realities of BO’s shortcomings become more apparent, I wouldn’t necessarily bet the farm that that particular showdown will come to pass.

Freefall of Barack HUSSEIN Obama

"Barack HUSSEIN Obama.. Barack HUSSEIN Obama.. Barack HUSSEIN Obama" is finally experiencing a little trouble in paradise. This guy has had it way too easy with blacks, and the drive-by media all on his side. Coasting no more, Barack HUSSEIN Obama is now witnessing the first sign of deterioration in his campaign..

Thanks to extreme black movement who was supposed to be the "sure" vote, we now have blacks like Al Sharpton, & Rev. Wrong completely swamping Hossein Obama. Is this a real movement? Are the self righteous blacks threatened by Obama's success so much they may sabotage his nomination? This is a real debatable issue. Who needs a guy like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson when Blacks in America are capable of being successful without them? Do we smell a little threat to their existence?

This whole issue makes me and much of America nauseous. Rev. Wrong is a thug at the pulpit. A Racist and a phony. A gangster with an audience. Good news is.... He is becoming exposed. The more he's in the public eye, the more HUSSEIN's viability becomes an issue.

Fundaments of Enhancing Performance

Our visitors are entitled to some diversity in the nature of our content. So as the director of the ConservativeChatroom, I thought I would open a discussion in a new direction.

Performance.

All of (most of us) here at CC believe in seeking exceptional performance. We understand life is rewarding to those who are capable of achieving outstanding performance. Over achievers are rewarded in all circles of life. Whether it is sports, academics, hobbies, socially, politically etc.. Effort is not a rewarding factor. Only performance.

Now is a good time to discuss certain fundamentals to enhancing your performance. These 10 items can be applied in all aspects of life. Use them and see how your results will soar!

1. Take full responsibility for your thoughts and actions

2. Have Goals. Specific Goals.

3. Have a Plan for your goals. Detailed plan down to activities daily to get you to your goal.

4. Envision success. Thoughts of failure are not be allowed

5. Think it through. Develop your mental skills so you constantly perform to the best of your ability. Always have "Plan B" when adversity strikes.

6. Engage in one thing at a time. Have confidence, and remain focussed on each moment has it comes at you. Do not get bogged down with past or future moments

7.. Realize that you cannot control what happens around you but only your response to it. You must be in control of your self before you can control your performance

8. Practice what you are going to do in your performance

9. Learn each and every day. Keep an open mind.

10. Keep in simple.

When Will Hollywood Figure It Out?

Accusing Hollywood of being a filmic crap factory is nothing new. They’ve been churning out garbage for decades. But in most cases, their failures aren’t due to a complete ignorance of what the people want, they fail due to a lack of execution. Hollywood, for the most part, dictates what’s cool, or at the very least, has their finger on the pulse of America and make money by making movies that speak to it.

But it makes me wonder how an industry that has been so successful in knowing what America wants can be so blind when it comes to movies about the war on terror? Is it that they are stubborn? Is it that they are simply stupid? Is it that Hollywood’s ego has finally expanded beyond the smog in the LA basin and now they firmly believe that they can tell us what to watch, and are no longer held accountable by the wants of the movie-going community?

In the latest example of incomprehensible arrogance, Hollywood has brought us the newest stylized MTVish hackjob about the war in Iraq, and just as the previous 5 films of the same topic did, it too failed miserably.

Consider, if you will, the following names:

Robert Redford, Ryan Phillipe, Susan Sarandon, Jake Gyllenhall, Reese Witherspoon, Tommy Lee Jones, Brian DePalma, Charlize Theron, Josh Brolin, Samuel L Jackson, Jessica Biel, Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Christina Ricci

Now, if I were to tell you that these people headlined a cast of 6 films, would you say that they were box office successes or failures?

These are the stars/directors behind the following six films that Hollywood has decided to try shoving down the throat of a greatly unappreciative audience; In the Valley of Elah, Home of the Brave, Redacted, Rendition, Lions for Lambs and the latest, Stop-Loss.

Now, not all of these films were complete, abysmal, horrendous, embarrassing failures. Rendition did open with a $4 million weekend, which while not the worst opening ever, was still bad enough to make a couple of movie execs not want to face their boss on Monday. Of course, it didn't get any better and limped out of theatres a few weeks later compiling a paltry $9 million. Ouch. People liked the big stars, Reese and Jake, and saw the movie. They then found out what it was about and told everyone else not to go see it.

Then, there was Lions For Lambs, a flick with a cast that would spell instant success had it not been about what it was about. It brought in $6.7 million in its first weekend. Not good. Then, it too suffered a few more really really bad weeks before giving the world a respite and just going home, taking in a whole $14.9 million. Now, sure, 14.9 million bucks ain’t bad for little old me, but considering the budget was over $35 million, that one hurt. And hurt bad.

Now let’s talk about the bad. And I mean, the really really bad. About a year ago, Samuel L Jackson, the uber-hot Jessica Biel, Christina Ricci and everyone’s homeboy 50 Cent got together for their “Iraq war vets come home damaged” film “Home Of The Brave.” With a cast like that, how could it fail?! Well, no surprise here, it did just that. After negative responses from test market crowds, it earned a tiny release and left theatres after two weeks, raking in a total of…drumroll…wait for it…drums still rolling…$40,830! With an estimated budget of $12 million, I’m thinking that wasn’t the wisest of choices, Hollywood.

Maybe that sort of thing should set off an alarm in the head of some of these people. Maybe a film with a great cast that should’ve carried it to even modest success that instead failed miserably should’ve made the people in charge think twice about making releasing more films in the same vein? Maybe not.

Redacted, Brian De Palma’s war film released later in the year raked in $65k! And then there was Valley of Elah, from Oscar winning writer/director Paul Haggis (Crash), starring Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and (surprise) Susan Sarandon. It flopped its way in and out of theatres collecting a massive $6 million!

So what do we learn from all this? You and I, as sane and clear-thinking people, see this as an indication that the American people have NO interest in movies that shine a negative light on our soldiers or the war that they are fighting. But alas, we are not Hollywood. We are not so egotistic to assume that the people are too stupid to know what they want. We are not such assholes that we think our narrow views of the world are something that the rest of the country wants to spend money to see.

There are people out there who are still on board with the war, and there are quite a few who are tired of it. There are many people who never liked it, and there are a bunch who just hope we lose and come home. Hollywood, apparently, falls in to that last group. What Hollywood doesn’t understand is that AMERICA doesn’t agree. They simply can’t figure that out. They really aren’t stupid, they simply live in a bubble. When you live in this bubble, you realize that everyone around you says the same bullshit and everyone else simply agrees. So when everyone you work with all believes the same crap (and when those who don’t just shut up because they fear losing their jobs), you start to believe that everyone believes said crap. What they don’t realize in Hollywood is that there is a whole nation out there that continues on east of Silverlake, and that nation actually has a different opinion – as incomprehensible as that may seem.

Perhaps this latest crapbomb, Stop-Loss will help them realize that despite the actors, despite the directors, despite the marketing blitz, the people sign your paychecks and the people are sick of you badmouthing the effort and the sacrifice that our military makes. Sure, they’ll say “These are movies FOR the soldiers! We just hate their superiors!” Great, keep that idiotic argument going, keep green-lighting box office failures, and we’ll wave to you as we drive by Urth Caffé in the middle of the day as your unemployed ass pretends to be busy on your iBook with all the other unemployed douchebags in town.

**** I guess Hollywood isn’t completely filled with idiots; I did see today that they are hard at work adapting Atlas Shrugged for the big screen, starring Angelina Jolie as Dagny Taggart and Brad Pitt possibly as John Galt. Angelina's dad, Jon Voight is a staunch conservative...maybe he and his daughter have something in common, afterall?
